Start here: if you are still signed in to Telegram on any other device, the login code was almost certainly delivered there as an in-app message rather than by SMS. Open Telegram on that device and read it. If you have no other session, request the code once, wait 10–15 minutes without pressing resend, and then use the voice-call option. Repeatedly tapping "Resend" is the one thing that reliably makes this worse.

Why this happens more in Uzbekistan

It is not your phone and usually not your account. Two separate things stack on top of each other:

  • Telegram has been reducing SMS delivery since 2024. Sending international SMS costs real money per message, so Telegram routes codes through the app itself wherever it can. SMS is increasingly the fallback, not the default.
  • Uzbek operators restrict inbound international SMS. Filtering, throttling and routing rules on the operator side mean messages to +998 numbers are dropped or delayed more often than to numbers in other countries.

Neither of these is something you can fix from your side. What you can do is stop relying on SMS as the delivery channel.

The fixes, in the order worth trying them

  1. Check every device you are still logged in on. Phone, tablet, laptop, Telegram Web in a browser you left open. If any session is alive, the code arrives there instantly as a message from Telegram. This solves the majority of cases.
  2. Wait 10–15 minutes without pressing resend. Delayed SMS is common; the message frequently lands after the countdown has ended. Every extra request restarts flood protection and pushes the delay out further.
  3. Use the voice call. Once the SMS attempt has run out, Telegram offers to call and read the code aloud. Voice takes a different route than SMS and often gets through when messages do not.
  4. Check your operator's blocklist. Some numbers end up with international SMS blocked at the operator level, sometimes as an anti-spam setting the subscriber never asked for. Your operator's support can check and lift it.
  5. Move the SIM to a different handset. Rare, but it does happen: a full message store or a network registration problem on one device can silently swallow incoming SMS.
  6. Try again on Wi-Fi, or on mobile data instead. The in-app code path depends on Telegram reaching your device; a flaky connection blocks it even when the account is fine.

The trap: two-step verification without a recovery email

If you enabled two-step verification (2FA) and set a recovery email, you can always get back in. If you enabled it and skipped the email, and then forget the password, Telegram cannot help you — support has no override. The only path is resetting the account after 7 days of inactivity, which deletes the messages in it.

If your 2FA currently has no recovery email, add one now while you still have access: Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. It takes a minute and it is the difference between an inconvenience and a lost account.

Never give the code to anyone

The login code is the account. A very common scam runs like this: someone messages you claiming to be support, a friend in trouble, or a giveaway administrator, and asks you to forward "the code you just received". The moment you do, they are in.

Telegram never asks for the code. Neither does any legitimate service — including anywhere you buy Stars or Premium, which needs nothing beyond your public username. If a request for a code arrives together with time pressure, that is the scam, not the exception.

How to avoid the problem next time

  • Stay logged in on a second device. A desktop or web session you never close removes SMS from the equation permanently.
  • Enable 2FA with a recovery email. It protects the account and gives you a way back.
  • Keep a cloud password you can actually retrieve — a password manager entry, not a memory.
