How gifting actually works
Telegram has a built-in Gift Premium function. The sender specifies a recipient by username and pays; Telegram attaches the subscription to that account and sends them a notification. The sender never touches the recipient's account, and could not even if they wanted to.
That design has a useful consequence: a gift is one of the safest transactions on Telegram. Nothing sensitive changes hands in either direction. If anyone involved in a gift asks for a phone number, password or login code, the request has nothing to do with gifting.

Check the username twice
This is the one mistake with real consequences. The subscription goes to whichever username you typed — if you get a character wrong and that username exists, a stranger receives your gift and there is no way to reverse it.
Copy and paste rather than typing from memory, and check the profile the username actually opens before you pay. Usernames also change: someone who was @name last year may not be now.
