How to activate a Telegram Premium gift code

What's the difference between a gift code and a direct Premium gift?

Telegram has two different ways to "gift" Premium, and they're easy to mix up:

• A direct gift — a friend enters your username and buys Premium straight for you. It activates automatically, no code or "Activate" button needed (see how to gift Telegram Premium to someone).
• A gift code — codes usually distributed to several giveaway or channel boost-contest winners at once. Each code arrives as its own link or text and needs manual activation.

Where does a gift code come from?

The most common case: a channel owner runs a Premium giveaway to reward their audience. Among users who boosted the channel or met the entry conditions, winners are picked at random and each one gets an individual Premium code. Telegram generates the code automatically and sends it to the winner as a message.

How do you activate the code?

1. Open the code's link — it usually arrives as a link in the format t.me/giftcode/.... Open it in the mobile Telegram app.
2. Check the gift screen — it shows the gift's duration (3, 6 or 12 months) and which channel or user sent it.
3. Tap "Activate" — once confirmed, Premium turns on immediately on your account.

If the code arrived as plain text instead of a link (a string of letters and numbers), enter it under Settings → Telegram Premium in the code-activation field and check it.

Can a code expire?

Yes — gift codes aren't kept forever. If a code isn't activated within a certain window, it expires and becomes invalid. That's why it's worth activating a code as soon as you get it, rather than leaving it "for later."

What if the code doesn't work, or came from an unknown source?

• ✅ Recall exactly where the code came from — an official channel giveaway, or someone you don't know;
• ✅ If it's a link, open it in the mobile Telegram app (desktop can run into issues);
• ✅ Update the app to the latest version and try again;
• ⚠️ If anyone asks for your password, an SMS code, or login details in exchange for the code — that's a scam. A real gift code never asks for that.
